Chapter Twenty-Seven
Zero
After a careful inspection of the area where we were heading, I couldnât see any sign of our pursuers. I hoped theyâd been held up by the creatures so we could gain some distance on them.
âAre we good to go?â Rex asked.
He looked ready to take off if I told him we were in danger again, but I nodded. âWeâre good. Help me back up, and we can keep going.â
âQuickly,â Jake said.
I nodded and grunted as Rex pulled to help me mount our horse in front of him again. âThanks. Letâs go. Things could change rapidly.â
We urged the horses forward at a fast walk out of the woods. I glanced around to see if anything had changed, but the road seemed just as deserted as before.
âCanter?â Rex asked.
I nodded, and everyone else answered in the affirmative as well, so he urged our horse up to a trot and directed him to the grassy shoulder on the side of the road before nudging him into a canter.
Normally, riding the canter felt like riding a rocking horse, but it was harder to sit the canter when riding double. Not quite as comfortable. I could only hope that we would find a couple more horses before too long. I glanced over at Alex and Lia to see how they were faring, and they appeared to be doing pretty well.
Good. At least they werenât struggling, but I still wanted my own horse again.
Jake was at the front of the group a couple hours later when we ran into our next problem⦠or potential problem, anyway.
Weâd been trading off between walking, trotting, and cantering over the course of the day, and hadnât seen anything. Then we saw the sign for another little town. This one was occupied. No creatures, only normal citizens. Citizens who likely wouldnât want a group our size riding through.
It wasnât a recognized safe zone, but the people living in it had closed it off enough to make an unofficial one.
I could see some of the occupants as they patrolled the border, and noticed they were armed.
âWe risked going through an armed town once,â I muttered to Rex. âI doubt it would go as well this time. We donât want to risk losing the few supplies we have left.â
He eyed the town warily, but shrugged. âYou never know, they could be like the guy at the other town and just lead us through without issue.â
âOr they could lead us into the town to ambush us, take our supplies, and kick us out,â I countered. âI know weâre in a bit of a rush, but Iâd rather go around the town to avoid confrontation.â
Jake paused at the next crossroad. âAre we going around? The villagers noticed us.â
Sure enough, when I looked back toward the town, the people were no longer pacing along their boundary, but stopped to face us. Even from a distance, I could see some of them pointing.
From their perspective, we were a fairly large group of probably armed riders, who could potentially be a threat to their safety.
